DIRTYCLEAN x Wildhomestay | The Clean Slate, April 2025!
Due to the somewhat extreme weather on Saturday, the Clean race ended up being our hardest event yet and most of the participant’s most challenging race to date. A real, Day In Hell!
About 120 people turned up at short notice for what we hope becomes a spring classic! 75km of gravel and quiet roads on Chongming Island at the end of March. Good to see so much enthusiasm in Shanghai for a gravel event! Congratulations to our podium winners

After canceling the last Clean due to weather and this time having to change the course due to a last minute tunnel closure it was a struggle for us but a bunch of fun hosting such a passionate and authentic cycling community. Thanks for all the support from everyone from route selection, to looking after riders who have never done these types of challenges, to providing all the photographs. #realcyclists #sufferingsmiles
Congratulations to the 2024 Clean #2: Daming South, Winners
It was a epic course and an appropriate way to end the Dirty Cycling Challenge series. We’ve decided to stop our Dirty Challenges (this one also came with Dirty Water Stop and Dirty Noodles) after six years as nearly all our dirty is being concreted over and there does not seem to be much interest in a all-surface endurance gravel type races. We will still adventure out, get lost and explore the area, just in a different way and format. Thanks to all the participants and sponsors who have joined over the years.

Sunday Clean & Dirty Recovery
One group went on a chilled Poshan recovery ride and the other a dirty reservoir revenge loop. Another on a long run through the local bush!
Next Up: Clean #3 Corked Highway & Shangtan Sprint- 16th & 17th November. A little different!
We will also know and present the DirtyClean 2024 Specialized Queen & King awards on Sunday lunch. Many thanks to Specialized China for the great awards.
It rained, then rained more and then stopped raining for the race but rain was still coming off the mountains with rain running down the rain covered roads. This made the little concrete roads super slippery which resulted in people getting a bit too touchy with their brakes and slipping over. Lesson learned for both us and the participants. We won’t run this course again during the spring or wet seasons. Participants need to heed our warnings on tire choice and pressure and work on their steep decent braking skills. Regardless a fun and challenging day was had by all and thankfully nothing was broken, other than an exploding wheel!

The current standings for the Specialized’s bikes King & Queen award: ShawnC and JoelleT are first place and in line to win some great Sworks gear. One race down and three to go so it’s still early days and anyone’s taking!
Next up is Clean #2:Beast of East. 99% good tarmac! 28 race tires are fine but 32s are more comfy and quicker?

Thanks to all for supporting the more adventurous community driving side of our cycling.
Not too hot but lots of water, sweat and hills. I personally think this is the most stunning route but that’s up for debate. 135km of riding with a 1km freshly cut walk down to the river linked various routes we had been doing for a few years. We had our first fixed gear challengers and hopefully next time a ebiker? Very much look forward to expanding on this area and the next Dirty on the 28th of October.

Something Sharp – The Clean Epic. Probably our most challenging Clean to date. 185km of hills, 7 timed segments, lots of team work, a sprinkling of dirty (but ridable on the day), and full sun led to probably everyone’s hardest day on the bike this year. I’ve been meaning to do this route for some time and have been riding different parts of it for years. The dirty sections in our area are slowly getting lost to concrete and the concrete sections slowly getting tarmac’d and enlarged. A never-ending development of roads! Its progress in most respects and the area remains mostly traffic free with stunning mountain views. The route took the participants between 8 and 12 hours and about 30% of the participants did not manage to complete the long route but still managed cycling PB’s in time and effort! Respect to everyone.
The next Clean will be on the 18th of November. It will be a more traditional format on wider tarmac roads more similar to a traditional road racing course. Many thanks for Specialized for the winner prizes, to Nio for providing a recon and support car and to all our other partners who help make these events possible.

A fantastic course and great weather for the last Dirty Clean of 2022. The expressions on peoples faces sums up the pleasure and pain 🙂 A huge thanks to our partners for all the great prizes. We hope to announce next year’s calendar in December along with this season’s winners. We look forward to seeing many new faces and old legs again for 2023.
